This concerns the musical festival within which other artistic disciplines are also incorporated. The programme offers not only rock, but also a wide variety of musical genres, including jazz and modern classical. The important parts of programme are exhibitions, film screenings, the performances by theatre groups as well as other events.

Artists performing at previous festival have included PRESENT, PETER BLEGVAD, CHRIS CUTLER, JOHN GREAVES, FERDINAND ET LES PHILOSOPHES, JIM MENESES, ROOF, ESPLENDOR GEOMETRICO, TEST DEPT., ART ZOYD, THE EX, LAURIE AMAT, GOZ OF KERMEUR, etc. Local artists have included IVA BITTOVA, JABLKON, AGON ORCHESTRA and PAVEL FAJT, among others.

New musical groups, theatre troupes and artists from other disciplines make up a sizeable portion of the participants in Alternativa. For such people performing in an important event like this may be the impetus for further activity. Young performers with unconventional leanings (particularly those from outside of Prague) have little possibility to present themselves to a wider public and Alternativa provides them with a forum in which to consider their own work within the context of other work being done by their peers and international guests. The festival serves for them as a source of both experience and inspiration. Alternativa allows the public to acquaint itself with peripheral performance artists which, though they go against popular currents and are often overlooked by mass media, are of high artistic quality.

The festival takes place at the end of every year in Prague and other Czech cities.
